Trauma, Theology & Terror: The Role of Fear in High-Control Groups & Cults - Focus Session
Trauma, Theology & Terror is a 60-minute, survivor-centred deep dive into how high-control religions and cultic systems use fear to shape your beliefs, behaviour, and sense of self. If you’ve lived under the threat of hell, losing salvation, backsliding, divine punishment, or being “left behind,” this session will help you understand why those fears felt so real and why they can linger long after.
We’ll look at how chronic spiritual fear rewires the nervous system, creates hypervigilance, scrupulosity, people-pleasing, authority anxiety, and trauma bonds, and why these responses are signs of survival, not failure. Using Steven Hassan’s BITE Model, we’ll break down how groups control behaviour, information, thoughts, and emotions to keep people compliant and afraid to leave.
You’ll also learn how common doctrines such as eternal conscious torment, the unforgivable sin, rapture anxiety, “God sees your thoughts,” and divine punishment become internalised scripts that shape identity and keep you in cycles of fear and confusion.
Finally, we’ll explore trauma-informed ways to soften the grip of fear: grounding, reconnecting with body cues, inner critic work, and safety scripts.
This session is for anyone who’s ever wondered, “Why do I still feel scared?” and offers clarity, validation, and tools to support your recovery and autonomy.
This is a digital product. Nothing will be shipped, your resource will be delivered straight to your inbox for instant access.
