The Shattering of the Self: Religious Trauma Recovery and the Impact of Shame - Focus Session
In this focus session, Jane Kennedy looks at the impact of the shame we often experience in high-control faith spaces and how developing our sense of Self helps us recover.
The session looks at: Shame as a mechanism of control in religious systems; Psychological, spiritual, and somatic, or embodied impacts of internalised shame; Shame-based teachings and behaviour; The impact of rejection sensitive dysphoria; And tools for recovery that allow us to find our voice and agency again or perhaps for the first time.
We’ll look at the difference between shame and guilt, the shame-fear loop that keeps us feeling small and the felt sense of shame-lag. You’ll be invited to reflect on the shame-based messages that have formed you and may continue to show up, and the way shame becomes embodied. There are specific ways we experience gendered and sexual shame and certainly, the queer community suffers in high-control faith spaces when it comes to being shamed and shut out.
This is for you if you’ve wanted to learn how to move from shame to Self-compassion and Self-trust.
